Thimphu: Bhutan’s Himalayan Capital in Wang Chhu Valley
Thimphu lies in a high Himalayan valley along the Wang Chhu river, tightly framed by mountains. Established as Bhutan’s capital by the early 1960s, it combines government institutions with traditional Bhutanese architecture and lacks traffic lights, relying on traffic police instead.

Thimphu is the political and cultural center of Bhutan, set within a sharply defined Himalayan valley.
It became the capital when the government seat moved from Punakha in the mid-20th century.
The city’s controlled modernization means official buildings cluster in the center while preserving Bhutanese architectural style. Nearby, the Simtokha Dzong fortress dates back to 1629, and Kuenselphodrang Park offers panoramic views of the city and mountains.
